A funny reflection from a guy who almost quit his job.The reason why I wanted to get into Internet Marketing was to live the online lifestyle that I envy from other people so much.
Imagine, work for a few hours a week, then see your income trickle in almost automatically.
Well, yeah. That is, if you don’t suck at it.
See, I have zero budget to buy SEO tools. And the few SEO techniques I know are either outdated or outlawed by search engines.
What can an ordinary guy like me do?
Why I Failed – Hard (aka Excuse number 1)We all know what SEO is.
I mean, you wouldn’t be reading this article if you have no idea what the heck that 3-letter word is.
Many people debate on its merits. Some even call it snake oil or bogus.
The fact of the matter is, whether we believe it or not, we can’t argue that search engines can be manipulated.
Even the big G can be exploited by some smart-ass. The reason is that search engines are not yet perfect.
There will always be a loophole. At least, for the foreseeable future.
This is the main reason why I fail in online marketing. This stupid 3-letter word is impeding my online passive income empire.
Follow Your Passion – NotWhen I was a fresh graduate, I’d always hear people say that you should follow your passion and you will never work a day.
Oh wait, I think that was Confucius. Never mind that, let’s just gloss over that.
Yes, they always say this sagely advice. And good thing I never listened to them. I did not quit my day job.
If I followed my passion and left my job you’d probably find me walking the streets drinking rubbing alcohol right now.
You know why?
Because I have not, I repeat, have not made any money from Internet marketing. Not in 2001, and certainly, not now.
My Advice? Don’t Quit Your Day JobAccording to statistics, only 13 percent of people worldwide actually like going to work.
Is that surprising? I bet not.
One of the reasons is most likely due to all these gurus who love to preach about the follow-your-passion model of living life.
Even Steve Jobs (no disrespect and may God rest his soul) in his famous speech, proclaimed this.
But this advice is so bad, you might as well listen to this guy.
Follow your passion is not for everyone. I dare say, it is not for the most of us.
So kid, don’t quit your day job yet.
How to Love Your JobThe only way to love your job is to make it so easy you work effortlessly and with the greatest of ease.
Admit it. Most of us don’t like our jobs because we are kinda sucking at it right this moment.
Put in the effort to get good at your job and you will find that it’s not as bad as you think it is.
Major exceptions to this are:
- You are working in a sweat shop
- You hate your office-mates
- Your boss is out to get you no matter what
- You’re really disinterested with it
How to Get Better at Your JobThe only way to get better is to change. Change means correcting mistakes.
If you are unproductive in your current job then create a disciplined system. If you are lagging behind, put a little bit of time after work to study up on stuff that you need to know.
Try to build yourself up, not because you want a raise, but because you want to improve yourself.
Self-improvement will help you develop skills at work and beyond. This is what Seth Godin means when he said, “choose yourself.”
There are side-effects when you are so good at your job.
You might get a raise, for one. You might, get a promotion. Heck, you might even start your own company.
This is not exactly passion. But in the grand scheme of things, you need your day job.
Be careful when quitting. Make sure you have a safety net first. Because passion may not be able to sustain your needs.
